The monsoon season is synonymous to the sticky, rough hair due to the humid weather. It may increase the likelihood of dandruff, hair loss and other issues. But one hair problem during this season that makes hair unmanageable is having dry, frizzy hair.
Though rainy weather is the major cause of frizzy hair, excessive use of hair products, styling gels, or machines can also cause this dryness. In addition to being difficult to manage, frizzy hair ruins our whole look. That’s why, your hair needs to be treated with the utmost care in this situation.
Health Shots got in touch with Dr Zeel Gandhi, B.A.M.S., expert in internal medicine, Panchakarma therapies, Yoga, and Ayurvedic nutrition, to find some of the best ways to protect hair from getting dry and frizzy.
Dr Gandhi says, “Straight hair appears attractive and admirable. While frizz can be genetic, if you notice more than the usual amount of it, there are many ways to fix it.”
Here are 7 hair care tips to avoid frizzy hair:
1. Balance the charge on hair with apple cider vinegar
The negative charge on the hair can make the strands repel each other, thus making your mane appear fluffy and frizzy. A negative charge also raises the hair cuticles, making them look rough. Diluted apple cider vinegar rinse helps manage frizz by decreasing the negative charge on hair. It aligns the cuticles and relaxes the hair shaft, making it appear less frizzy.
2. Ensure your shampoo and conditioner are pH balanced
Hair shampoos and conditioners that are not pH balanced can make the hair appear frizzy. Ensure your shampoo and conditioner are pH balanced that can help make hair look smooth, nourished and healthy. A mix of sour curds, amla powder, hibiscus powder, and methi powder when used regularly before hair wash can help smoothen the hair texture.
3. Give your hair a cold rinse
The majority of hair experts agree that using a cold water rinse is best. Because cold water aids in closing your hair’s cuticle after a wash, this can work wonders for your hair. In fact, it also aids in retaining moisture, minimizing frizz and enhancing the strength and shine of your hair.
4. Moisturize
Dry, damaged hair is more porous. Such hair absorbs moisture, which raises the cuticles and makes the hair appear frizzy. This worsens when the environment is humid, especially during the monsoon. Pre-wash hair oiling prevents the hair from losing moisture, thus preventing it from being affected by humidity. Moisturizing also replenishes the surface lipid layer of hair, creating an efficient barrier between the cuticle and the environment. Regular use of damage repair hair masks can help prevent the appearance of frizz.
5. Eat healthy
Eating healthy amounts of fat-rich foods like walnuts, almonds, coconut, avocado, ghee, etc can help hair grow thicker, stronger, and less frizzy.
6. Use an egg hair mask
Eggs are a great source of protein and have several advantages for our health, including strengthening our hair. Along with the protein, the vitamins and minerals found there can aid in promoting hair growth, giving you silky, smooth hair. Combine one egg with one tablespoon of olive oil. Apply this mixture twice daily to provide damaged hair with rapid nourishment and texture while preventing split ends and hair breakage.
7. Styling
Frizz can be a result of improper styling techniques. Excessive dry brushing can make the hair frizzy. If you have a natural wave or curl clump, style it appropriately to make it appear properly aligned. Dimethicone based leave-in conditioners are popular for creating a protective layer between the environment and your hair to lessen the appearance of frizz and are a quick fix to tame frizz instantly. Although in the long term, silicones can worsen the dry hair problem if not addressed at the root cause.
Here are some other tips to keep in mind to avoid frizzy hair:
- Avoid using any hair products containing alcohol.
- To avoid dry brushing, brush your hair when it is still damp.
- Avoid using a blow dryer regularly.
- Use a cotton cloth that is soft to pat your hair instead of using a towel.
- Before hair styling, always use a smoothing serum to control frizz and boost hair shine.
Takeaway
It’s important to understand the cause of frizzy hair. If it is due to hair damage and dryness, one should care appropriately for the hair. As for genetic causes, remember that styles change over a period of time. Fluffy, fuzzy, soft hair is out of fashion now. But healthy hair is always in style.
