Facing hair problems such as hair loss or damaged or split ends can be cumbersome. They signal towards our poor hair care habits. That doesn’t mean you have to splurge on expensive treatments at the salon regularly. But even a simple hair care routine can help you give your hair the care it deserves and needs. You’ve probably heard that getting regular trims is the best way to maintain healthy hair because they help to remove split ends and reduce breakage. But what if we say that there is a way to cut those dead ends without saying goodbye to your precious tresses? Well, say hello to the hair dusting method!
Curious about what is it and how can it help? Let’s find out!
Well, hair dusting is a new technique, basically a hair cutting method! It helps to get you longer hair without split ends, especially if you don’t want to compromise on the length of your hair by getting hair trimming.
What is hair dusting?
“Hair dusting aims to preserve your hair length and volume by removing the unhealthy split ends. Split ends don’t cure on their own, and the only way to get rid of them is to cut them off. In hair dusting, the split ends are removed strand by strand, removing only the damaged parts. Hence, the name dusting,” Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist, and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, tells Health Shots.
Simply put, in the case of hair trimming, you usually lose inches of your hair length. But in the case of hair dusting, it only takes off your hair’s length by around a quarter inch or less.
Hair dusting is suitable for all hair types. Here are its advantages:
1. It makes hair more manageable by removing the pesky flyaways and making styling easy.
2. Dusting prevents the split ends from expanding up the hair length. If your hair is split at many places, it can cause breakage.
3. It is more efficient and economical than getting the length shortening trim. By getting hair dusting done you can increase the time gap between cuts.
4. Unlike trimming, you can save your hair length by dusting your hair.
5. Dusting is also very beneficial for those with curly hair, since dusting does not drastically shorten hair.
How often should you get hair dusting?
You should trim your hair every three months, according to experts. A full trim takes away a minimum of 1–2 inches of hair’s length. But because along with unhealthy hair, it also takes a lot of hair length. Here, you can try hair dusting. In case of hair dusting, it is advised to dust it every 6 to 8 weeks to keep your hair looking healthy and happy.
Although everyone’s hair is different, you might need to dust your split ends more frequently if you use style tools or have thin hair that is more vulnerable to damage. Keep in mind that dusting your hair only serves to maintain it by removing split ends. However, this method does not emphasise hair styling.

Dr Kapoor says, “The procedure is very simple. The first step is smoothening the hair to make the damage visible, and then the expert will just snip off the damaged split ends. If your hair is very prone to split ends, then you might need to get it dusted more frequently.” Your hair stylist will guide you for the time to come in for hair dusting.
